Laura Powers is an aerial dancer and oil painter based in Florida. Through figurative painting and movement, she explores the relationship between body and soul. Pope St John Paul II said, "The body, in fact, and only the body, is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine." Laura's art and life is contingent upon the Logos made flesh, the Incarnation of Christ.
Laura performed with the LHPS chapter of David Copperfield’s Project Magic (2012-2015) and the FSU Flying High Circus (2016-2020). Now, she collaborates with other artists, such as fiddlers, percussionists, and dancers. She is interested in the subtleties of movement, emotion, and natural gestures. Laura investigates how this contrasts with the traditional fanfare of the circus. What if the acrobat whispered?
As a painter, Laura focuses on the figure and portraiture. Enamored with the slow medium of oil, she lets each piece gestate through layers of paint, text, and concept. Her process, liminal and luminous, stubbornly resists our busy culture of mass production. Laura completed her BA in Studio Art (2019), as well as an MS in Special Education (2020) from Florida State University.
Laura also directs the circus arts program at Gym Force in Tallahassee, Fl. Her classes emphasize creativity, excellence, physical wellness, and personal growth. Laura believes that arts participation can be transformative for all ages.
